Give Me Understanding  That I May Observe  Your Law

Psalm 119:34
Give me understanding,  that I may observe Your law,
And keep it  with all my heart.

The writer  of this psalm  knew  some very important facts  about himself.     He knew that he liked  to have good things happen  to himself  and that he definitely wanted  to avoid everything  that would have dire consequences.

He also knew  that the LORD  is holy  and good.     The LORD did everything  so wonderfully well  and was a trusted source  of help  for him.     Therefore,  he looked  to God  as a small child looks  to his father  and wants  to be just like his beloved father.     The psalmist desired  to be a good child  of God  just because it was so obvious  that God  was his ideal  in every respect.     All God’s love,  kindness,  purity,  mercy,  faithfulness,  patience,  and trustworthiness  were aspects  that the psalmist held dear  and admired.

All these aspects  of God’s being  are something we,  also,  need  to hold dear.     We need  to realize these truths  about the Lord,  so that our natural tendency  to sin  can be held  in check.     As we come  to love  and honor God,  we will want  to be like Him  in all our ways.

“Understanding”  is a gift  from God.     Only God can open  our hearts  and minds  to realize  the difference  between right  and wrong  —  good and evil.     That is why  we must pray  for “understanding”.     When King David wanted  to be  in step  with God,  he used different words  as he prayed  in Psalm 51:10-12,

Create  in me  a clean heart,  O God,
And renew  a steadfast spirit  within me.
Do not cast me away  from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit  from me.
Restore to me  the joy  of Your salvation,
And sustain me  with a willing spirit.

The  “willing spirit”  is a spirit  that “understands”.     The “understanding” spirit  is  “steadfast”  and true  because it is the  “Holy Spirit” working  in our hearts.     When the “Holy Spirit” works  in our hearts,  we come  to know the  “joy of Your salvation”.

Asking  for understanding  is a daily necessity  because every day  we face  so many different scenarios  that can lead us  into sin.     With “understanding”  we will be able  to use good judgment  and remain steadfast  in the truths  of God.     All that  will keep us close  to God  and assure our salvation  as we are enabled  to retain  our faith  in Jesus.

Understanding strengthens  our love  for the LORD  and gives us the peace  we need  as we journey  through this life.     With joy  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for gladly  giving us the understanding  we need  as we learn  to walk  according to Your love  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
