He  Flatters Himself  Too Much

Stubborn pride  and arrogance  have eternally ruined many.     Those  who are proud  and arrogant laugh  at their ability  to put down  other people,  mock them,  and take advantage  of them.     Their wickedness grows  as they feel  more and more power  in their evil ways  of tearing others down  and controlling others.

This wickedness  is not new.     King David describes it in Psalm 36:1-4,

An oracle  within my heart
concerning the transgression  of the wicked person:

There is no dread  of God  before his eyes,
for  in his own eyes  he flatters himself  too much
to discover  and hate  his sin.
The words  of his mouth  are malicious  and deceptive;
he has stopped acting wisely  and doing good.
Even  on his bed  he makes  malicious plans.
He sets himself  on a path  that is not good
and does not reject evil.

The wicked person’s  biggest failure  is that  “There is  no dread  of God  before his eyes.”     He foolishly  imagines  he can best his Maker.     He looks  at all the evil  he has done  and laughingly imagines  it doesn’t matter.     He imagines all those  he has hurt  are just too dumb  and weak  —  and therefore  deserve  to be overtaken.     He takes great pride  in his wickedness  and deceptions.     It is his plan  to be as “malicious”  as he possibly can.     Never once  does he  “reject evil”.     He’s not embarrassed  over the evils  he has done  —  they are his pride.

How can he possibly “hate  his sin”  when his sin gives him  so many advantages  and power.     He has a self-satisfying  —  and most self-deluding  —  belief  that he can get away with anything  he pleases.     Since he has  “no dread  of God”,  he’s too proud  “to discover  and hate  his sin”.     He has no remorse  —  no guilty feelings  —  no embarrassment.

Since evil people  have  “no dread  of God”.     3 John 1:11 says,

The one  who does good is  of God;  the one  who does evil  has not seen God.

They have not  “seen God”  in all the marvelous things  in creation  —  they have not  “seen God”  in the fulfillment  of all His prophecies  of a Savior  —  they have not  “seen God”  in the love  and goodness  of caring Christians.     They turn a blind eye  to all that is good,  marvelous,  and loving.     Since they despise God  and do  “not reject evil”,  they will face God’s judgment, as described in Revelation 21:8,

But  for the cowardly  and unbelieving  and abominable  and murderers  and immoral persons  and sorcerers  and idolaters  and all liars,  their part  will be  in the lake  that burns  with fire  and brimstone,  which is the second death.

Absolutely everyone  needs  to be aware  of what is  in their hearts.     We all need  to have a  “dread  of God”  and His righteous authority  to judge everyone.     Everyone needs  to learn  to “discover  and hate  his sin”.     We cannot afford  to imagine  that God will not notice  our hypocrisy,  unbelief,  and  “malicious plans”.

Since  the LORD  lovingly shows us  the right way,  we thankfully  look  to His word  to be our constant guide.     As we learn  to hate  our sins  and go to our Savior  for forgiveness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for faithfully shepherding us  through this life.”

Love,
Margaret
