If  You Love Me,  You Will  Keep My Commandments

A few years ago,  I knew a little girl  who loudly  and staunchly declared her love  for her mother.     But,  her declaration fell flat.     In her actions,  she would run away  and hide  when her mother called her.     If she didn’t feel like  obeying her mother,  she would punch her mother  in the stomach.     When her mother told her  to stay in their yard,  she would wander all over the neighborhood,  crossing forbidden streets, etc.

Her saucy declaration  of love  was meaningless.     Before judging her,  we need  to take a look  at our own lives  with our LORD.     God Almighty  has proven His love  for us  in Christ Jesus  —  and in His daily care for us.     We might  staunchly declare  that we are Christians  and love the LORD.     But,  how often do we stubbornly  and knowingly disobey  His perfect word  to us?

We want to do  what we want  to do  —  when  and how  we want  to do it.     But,  what we want  to do  is not loving,  kind,  reverent,  or decent  in the eyes  of our heavenly Father  —  and we fully realize  those facts.     In other words,  our declared love  is meaningless  —  just a bunch of words,  fallen flat.

Jesus tells us  in John 14:15,

If you love Me,  you will keep  My commandments.

An honest love  is shown  in obedience.

Jesus is God come down to us,  as a true man,  to suffer and die  to pay for our sins.     As a true man,  Christ had to obey  the Father’s will  perfectly.     He did just that.     In  John 15:10,  Jesus says,

If you keep  My commandments,  you will abide  in My love;  just as I have kept  My Father’s commandments,  and abide  in His love.

As a true man,  Jesus led a perfect,  sinless life.     He could do that because  of the powerful love  within Him  for each  and every one  of us.     Jesus’ obedience eventually led Him  to suffer and die  for us  on the cross.     He willingly obeyed  the Father’s will,  so that He could redeem us  from our sins.     That’s a most perfect love  and obedience.

In our sinful nature,  we cannot be  that perfect.     But,  in faith,  we can let our hearts  be molded  to Jesus’ words  of,  “If you love Me,  you will keep My commandments”.     As we think  on Jesus’ love for us,  we can let His love  guide  and mold  our actions.     That is why  1 John 2:3  says,

And by this  we know  that we have come  to know Him,  if we keep His commandments.

It is our thankfulness  for God’s love  in Christ Jesus  that leads us  to lovingly  obey God’s will  for us.     With hearts filled  with thanksgiving  for the love given  to us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for showing us  the marvelous wonders  of Your love  —  even while we were still  in sin.”

Love,
Margaret
