There Is  No One  Like Me

Sometimes  we get  into a rather desperate search  for something  and it’s good  to hear  that everything  that was searched for  has finally been found.     The search  can be ended.     We don’t have  to anxiously  look around  any more.

God wants  to tell us  that our search  is over.     We don’t have  to anxiously  look around  for another possible god  of any sort  because there is no other God.     In the book  of Isaiah,  God talks  to the people  of Israel  about how they worshiped idols  that could not hear,  see,  or move.     The people worshiped  a hunk  of wood  carved into a statue.     There was no way  that hunk  of wood  had power  to do anything.     The people  even had  to carry it around  as they cared  for it.

Because  that piece  of wood  was powerless,  it was sinful  to pretend  and hope  that it had power  to answer prayer.     In spite  of Israel’s sinful idol worship,  the LORD  still loved them  and wanted  to get them  to face the truth,  so they could have the peace  and salvation  they needed.

In Isaiah 46:8-10,  God says this  to Israel,

Remember this,  and be assured,
Recall it  to mind,  you transgressors.
Remember  the former things  long past,
For I am God,  and there is no other;
I am God,  and there is no one  like Me,
Declaring the end  from the beginning
And from ancient times  things which have not been done,
Saying,  ‘My purpose  will be established,
And I will accomplish  all My good pleasure.’

The Israelites  were a people  who saw first hand  the fulfillment  of many different prophecies.     They had the prophecies recorded  in their scriptures  and they were living through the fulfillment,  just as God said they would.

It was God’s love  that urged them  to remember  what was written  and look  at how  it was fulfilled.     God did all that  to prove  that He keeps His word  —  and to build  the faith  of the Israelites,  who were being awfully faithless.     The idols  the Israelites carried around  were helpless  —  just a pile  of junk.     Trusting  in a piece  of wood  brought  no assurance  or peace.

It was  in sheer pity  that God longed  to turn them away  from their futile idol worship  and cause them  to think  about the truths  they knew  and needed  to face up to.     They needed  to take  the time  to recollect all  that had happened  in Israel’s history  and figure out  the truth  about God.

If they would only  take an honest look  at the facts,  they would easily  be able  to see  that there is no other God  than the LORD God Almighty.     God knew  that it was sheer stubbornness  that caused the people  to refuse  to admit  to the truths  throughout their history.

In His everlasting love  for all  of us,  God also asks us  to look  at the history  of this world  as it is recorded  in the Bible  and other historical records.     When we do,  we will find  a great comfort  and reassurance  in seeing how trustworthy  the LORD is.     We can know  for sure  that when He says  our sins  are forgiven  when we turn  to Christ  in repentance,  they truly are  totally forgiven and forgotten.

What a wonderful  and comforting blessing it is  to know  for sure  that there is no other god  —  and there is absolutely  no one  like the LORD  our God.     We can totally depend  on His guidance  and promises.     We don’t have  to look  anywhere else.

As we think  about all the evidence  we have  of God’s faithfulness  and truthfulness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     I can rest  in Jesus’ love  and forgiveness  because He has proven  He is true.     God really does love  even me.”

Love,
Margaret
