My Brothers

There are many  who claim  a close fellowship  with Jesus.     They will say  that Jesus  is their Savior.     But, curiously,  they don’t care  to study  God’s actual word,  spend time  in prayer,  or praise God  for much of anything.     Many have the excuse  of a lack  of time.     And many  are caught up  in the flurry  of church activities  with false doctrines.     They really  don’t have time  to honestly read,  consider,  and understand  God’s actual word  as it affects their faith  and life style.

Knowing this challenge  from all eternity,  Jesus has a truth  we all need  to keep in mind.     Luke 8:19-21 says,

And His mother  and brothers  came to Him,  and they were unable  to get  to Him  because of the crowd.     And it was reported  to Him,  “Your mother  and Your brothers  are standing outside,  wishing to see You.”     But He answered  and said  to them,  “My mother  and My brothers  are those  who hear the word  of God  and do it.”

The bottom line is  that no one  can honestly claim  a relationship  of any sort  with Christ Jesus  unless they gladly  and willingly “hear the word  of God  and do it.”     It’s most vital  to realize  that we are to  “hear the word  of God  and do it.”     Jesus is not referring  to studying some preacher’s sermons  and writings.     He is referring  to the Bible  —  the inspired  “word of God”.     That is what  we need  to diligently study  and think on.

There is a reason why many  do not care  to read  “the word  of God”.     It scares them.     It reveals their sinful natures,  and shows  how they are condemned eternally  —  unless they turn  to Jesus  in childlike faith.     Hebrews 4:12 tells us,

For the word  of God  is living  and active  and sharper than any two-edged sword,  and piercing  as far  as the division  of soul  and spirit,  of both joints  and marrow,  and able  to judge  the thoughts  and intentions  of the heart.

God’s word  shows us  the stark ugliness  of our sins.     We can’t honestly  read God’s word  without realizing  that we are eternally condemned  to hell  —  unless we put  our faith  and trust  in Jesus.     The realization  of our utter unworthiness  is scary.     But,  the proven truths  of God’s love  and forgiveness  in Christ Jesus  give a relief  and joy  beyond compare.

So,  let us dig  into God’s word  —  learn the awful truth  of our sins  —  confess our sins  —  accept  God’s forgiveness  through faith  in Christ  —  and become a part  of God’s family,  where Christ  will joyfully call us,  “My brothers”.

Thinking  on Jesus’ love  for us  as He suffered  the pains  of crucifixion,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for showing us  the depths  of Your love  on the cross  that we may live  in it.”

Love,
Margaret
