Though He Scoffs At the Scoffers
Though He Scoffs At the Scoffers
Christians will encounter — it seems to go with the Christmas season — those who have mocked and been sneeringly contemptuous of God’s word and of Jesus Christ actually being the fulfillment of many prophecies. They are downright hateful about being categorized as sinners. Never mind that God Almighty calls absolutely everyone a sinner. They feel singled out of the crowd and are determined to attack someone — just any one — who dares to quote from the Bible about us needing to straighten out our lives.
They try to debunk God’s word with false claims, which show that they don’t have a clue about what they are speaking of. Their fury over being called a sinner blinds them. It’s just sad to see their stubborn hardheartedness as they try to scoff at obvious eternal truths.
God’s word has a number of passages about scoffers. Just a few of them could include,
There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
Do not reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you.
Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
A wise son accepts his father’s discipline,
But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
A scoffer seeks wisdom, and finds none,
But knowledge is easy to him who has understanding.
A scoffer does not love one who reproves him,
He will not go to the wise.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
These verses show how hard it is to present God’s truths to someone who scoffs God’s authority and ways. But, no matter how hard it is, there is another truth that can surprise us and make us marvel at God’s patience and faithfulness with this world. For all those who humbly see and accept God’s word as eternal truth, there is a special promise. It is in Proverbs 3:34,
Though He scoffs at the scoffers,
Yet He gives grace to the afflicted.
God Almighty scoffs those who insist on denying obvious truth and remaining scoffers. They will bear the results of their unbelief in the end, so those who trust in the LORD do not need to let their hearts be troubled at the hatred and scoffing of unbelievers. As God’s children face this world of unbelief, our heavenly Father gives grace to all His dear children, who are afflicted with mockery and hateful attacks. This grace is in the knowledge that only the LORD is the Almighty. He alone will be the final Judge of all people. No one will escape His judgment — no matter how “cool” and intelligent they think they are.
Even Jesus Christ faced much scoffing and mocking throughout His preaching and death on the cross. But, none of that mattered in the end because He rose from the dead as King of kings, Lord of lords, and God of gods. Though He suffered much at the hands of sinful mankind, He is the Victor eternally.
It is a very blessed thing to humbly accept God’s truth and grace. God gives grace to His beloved here on earth and forever in heaven. Let us wisely look at all the proofs of God’s salvation in Christ Jesus, as found in His word — and let us wisely live according to that truth and righteousness.
As we see the beauty of God’s sacrificial love for us, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for enabling us to see how You have worked all of history and salvation according to Your eternal word.”
A Christian devotional to glorify the LORD of lords and GOD of gods.
Pray for our country.
The LORD made this day, let us rejoice and be glad in Him.
The word of the LORD is tried;
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
Sing for joy in the LORD, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming to the upright.
How blessed are those who dwell in Thy house!
They are ever praising Thee.
Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Glory in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad.
Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
