Lord,  How Do We Know  the Way?

We all need reliable directions  in life.     When it comes  to our spiritual life  and coming to know  for sure  the way  to eternal life,  we cannot afford  to have anyone bamboozle us  with all sorts  of false claims.     False doctrines  lead straight  to eternal death  and damnation.     How can we ever  be sure  of the way  to heaven  when there are  all sorts  of preachers  claiming different things?     In his deep concern,  the apostle Thomas  asked Jesus  in John 14:5,

Lord,  we do not know  where You are going,  how do we know  the way?

Jesus’ answer makes us think  in a spiritual way.     As we think  about Jesus’  whole life  —  everything Jesus taught  —  and the way He lived,  we take in  Jesus’ answer  in John 14:6,

I am the way,  and the truth,  and the life;  no one comes  to the Father  but through Me.”

The very bottom line is  that absolutely  “no one”  can get  to heaven  unless they go  “through”  faith  in Christ Jesus.     In other words,  there is no other  “way”  to heaven,  no other  “truth”,  and no other eternal  “life”.     Everything else  in this whole wide world  of different beliefs,  philosophies,  and imaginations  is a falsehood  that will destroy eternally.

So,  it still begs the question  of how do we know  which preacher  is preaching the truth.     The answer is in John 1:1-5,

In the beginning  was the Word,  and the Word  was with God,  and the Word  was God.     He was  in the beginning  with God.     All things  came into being  through Him,  and apart  from Him  nothing came  into being  that has come  into being.     In Him  was life,  and the life  was the Light  of men.     The Light shines  in the darkness,  and the darkness  did not  comprehend it.

This is a spiritual description  of Jesus.     John shows  that Jesus is  “God”  because He existed  “in the beginning”.     As  “God”  Jesus created all things  —  “apart  from Him  nothing came  into being  that has come  into being”.     We think about  the repetition  of that phrase,  “the Word”.     We think about  the account  of creation  in Genesis 1,  where everything  was spoken  into being  and how Psalm 33:6,  along with many other scriptures, teach us,

By the word  of the LORD  the heavens  were made,
And by the breath  of His mouth  all their host.

Jesus is God,  and the Bible  is God’s  “word”  to us.     So,  when we pay attention  to  the Bible,  we are learning  from God  —  from Jesus.     It is straight  from the Bible  that God shows us  the way  to eternal life.     We dare not listen  to anyone claiming  to be the only way  to heaven  or claiming  to have full authority  to admit people  into heaven.     God’s word alone  can show us  the truths  about God.     The Bible preaches  God’s truths.

Gladly learning  from God’s word  every day,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for freely coming  to each  and every one  of us  and showing us  the way  in Your eternal Word.”

Love,
Margaret
