If the LORD  Had Not  Been My Help

We see it  in the news  —  we hear of it  in our local communities  —  and we experience it.     The wicked  have always been  persecuting God’s children.     Even today,  one might ask the question  of the psalmist  in Psalm 94:3-5,

How long  shall the wicked,  O LORD,
How long  shall the wicked exult?
They pour forth words,  they speak arrogantly;
All who do wickedness vaunt themselves.
They crush  Your people,  O LORD,
And afflict  Your heritage.

The wicked  ruthlessly murder,  plunder,  lie,  gleefully plan evil deeds,  and imagine that they will never  be punished  for their wickedness.     They might even imagine  that they are  in accord  with some other  great power  that approves  of their evils,  and that they are,  therefore,  protected  from any judgment  of the LORD.     Besides that,  they might feel  that the LORD  doesn’t even know  or care  about what they do  —  or else that God does not exist.

But,  the psalmist points out  that the LORD created  their ears and eyes.     The Creator  of all things  is more than fully aware  of what everyone does  —  He actually knows  what they are thinking.     That makes Him  a truly just Judge  over everyone.

In all  that God’s children suffer  under the actions  of the wicked,  we are assured  that the LORD  is sustaining them  “Until a pit is dug  for the wicked”.     (Psalm 94:13)     God is not slow  in caring  for His children.     In all our afflictions,  He knows how  to provide the grace  that will sustain us.     We long  for immediate relief,  but our Savior knows how  to strengthen us  in an honestly true faith,  hope,  and love.

Knowing that,  the afflicted psalmist confesses  in Psalm 94:17-19,

If the LORD  had not been my help,
My soul  would soon have dwelt  in the abode  of silence.
If I should say,  “My foot  has slipped,”
Your lovingkindness,  O LORD,  will hold me up.
When my anxious thoughts  multiply  within me,
Your consolations delight  my soul.

The psalmist  is testifying  that God  has been his help  in the worst  of situations.     He even admitted,  “My foot  has slipped”.     He’s saying  he sinned  by not trusting God  as fully  as God is worthy  of our trust.     Nevertheless,  God’s  “lovingkindness”  held him up  through thick and thin.     God is faithful,  even when we fail  in our weaknesses.     When we are so overwrought  with all sorts  of anxieties,  the LORD finds a way  to console us.     That brings us  a  “delight”  —  a happy,  hopeful relief  in our souls,  as we are assured  of God’s loving power  and nearness.

We can truly confess,  If the LORD  had not been my help,  my soul  would soon  have dwelt  in the abode  of silence.”     Without God’s sustaining love, we could never withstand  the evil onslaughts  of the wicked.     But,  God’s love  has promised  to always  be with us,  until we reach  our heavenly home.

In the end,  God will destroy all the wicked  —  and their evil  will be brought back  upon them.    So,  we can rest  in the LORD  —  trusting His almighty love  for us.     In the peace  of God’s eternal love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for sustaining us.”

Love,
Margaret
