Stand Firm  Against the Schemes  of the Devil

We often underestimate  the devil’s hate-filled intentions  to destroy us eternally.     Our temptations  are persistent  and strong,  but we often imagine  that giving in  to them  is not a big deal.     After all,  we think  we will benefit  by giving in  to our temptations.     We can’t imagine  —  or don’t want  to imagine  —  what will happen  in the long run  when we give in  to temptations.

We can get mighty tired  of not having  what we want  in life.     So,  when the devil  constantly tempts us  to take  what we wrongly want,  we can easily imagine  that it is something right  and good  for us.     We might even say  to ourselves  that since we really desire  this tempting thing,  that probably means  that it is  just fine  to have it.

So,  why does the devil  fight so hard  to tempt us  to sin?     He has an intense  jealousy  over the LORD’s dominion  and power.     In his pride,  he wants  to be  as God is  —  in almighty power,  riches,  glory,  and honor.     His pride is so strong  that he lies  to make people feel  that he is great.     Jesus said  of him  in John 8:44,

Whenever he speaks a lie,  he speaks  from his own nature,  for he is a liar  and the father  of lies.

So,  our battle  against his lies  has to be fought  every day  of our lives.     It’s a spiritual battle  in which we need  to be fully aware  of the  “schemes of the devil”  —  and of the help  God wants  to give us.     Paul instructs us  in Ephesians 6:10-17,

Finally,  be strong  in the Lord  and in the strength  of His might.     Put on the full armor  of God,  so that you will  be able  to stand firm  against the schemes  of the devil.     For our struggle  is not  against flesh  and blood,  but against the rulers,  against the powers,  against the world forces  of this darkness,  against the spiritual forces  of wickedness  in the heavenly places.     Therefore,  take up  the full armor  of God,  so that you  will be able  to resist  in the evil day,  and having done everything,  to stand firm.     Stand firm therefore,  having girded  your loins  with truth,  and having put on  the breastplate  of righteousness,  and having shod  your feet  with the preparation  of the gospel  of peace;  in addition  to all,  taking up the shield  of faith  with which  you will be able  to extinguish  all the flaming arrows  of the evil one.     And take the helmet  of salvation,  and the sword  of the Spirit,  which is the word  of God.

God knows  about our “struggle”  “against the world forces  of this darkness”.     We cannot fight  against the devil  with our own strength.     In this spiritual battle,  we must use  God’s armor  of “truth”“righteousness”“the gospel  of peace”“faith”“salvation”,  and “the word  of God”.

In the joy  and confidence  of God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for being our shield,  defender,  fortress, and sword  of sure defense.”

Love,
Margaret
