He Did Evil  Because…

Rehoboam was Solomon’s son,  who became king  after Solomon died.     He was not  particularly wise  in the way he ruled,  so that the kingdom  got split in two  —  Israel  and Judah.     In his lack  of wisdom,  he also  led all Israel  away from serving  the LORD,  so that  God then disciplined  the country  by allowing Egypt  to raid them.     When Rehoboam  finally humbled himself  before the LORD,  God felt sorry  for him  and did not allow Egypt  to completely destroy them.

But,  Rehoboam  did not learn  a lesson  from that tremendous  blessing.     Instead  of remaining humble  before the LORD,  so that he could continue  to receive God’s grace,  2 Chronicles 12:14  tells us,

And  he did evil  because  he did not  set his heart  to seek  the LORD.

Having received God’s grace  on numerous occasions  does not lead everyone  to thankfully recognize  God’s faithful love  —  or  to begin serving God  by living according  to His word.     God’s sheer mercy  does not  always lead  wicked people  to  “seek  the LORD”.

Rehoboam’s downfall  was  because  he did not set his heart  to seek  the LORD”.     That’s a truth  everyone  needs  to think about.     If we belligerently neglect  learning  and living  according  to God’s word,  we will end up  doing great “evil”  —  all “because”  we refused  to set our hearts  “to seek the LORD”.

Looking  at all the evils  rapidly increasing  in this world,  we can see  that  it is “because”  they all refuse  to set  their hearts  “to seek  the LORD”.

As we humbly  and faithfully  “seek  the LORD”  every day,  we thankfully say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for all that You do  to bring us  to Your salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
