For What  Is a Man Profited?

It’s so obvious  that we’re much better off  in this world  when we work  for a living.     One needs  to take on  the responsibility  of caring  for themselves  and their family.     We can earn  a home,  some clothes  on our backs,  and food  that satisfies.     But people start  to go far beyond  the basics.     It doesn’t take much  for human nature  to start dreaming  of a bigger  and “better” home,  more expensive clothes,  and more expensive foods.

Life morphs  from meeting needs  to meeting greeds.     Our priorities  in life  gradually change  over time,  so that we become  a far different person  from what we ever  imagined ourselves  to be.     Hearts change  and become proud  as they pat themselves  on the back  for blessings  that really are from God.

The changed heart  is a heart  that loves  the things  of the world  much more  than God.     That’s the sad part,  because absolutely  no one  can take the stuff  of this world  with them  when they die.     All those prideful greeds  are worthless  in the end.     That’s why Jesus tells us  in Luke 9:25,

For what  is a man profited  if he gains  the whole world,  and loses  or forfeits  himself?

Our souls  are much  more valuable  than any  of the stuff  of this world.     We’ll fully realize that  when we die  because  our souls  stay with us.     That’s why it’s much more important  and blessed  to live  in fellowship  with God now  —  paying attention  to what is true  for all eternity  — and paying attention  to the blessedness  of eternal truth,  faith,  hope,  and love.     Why “forfeit”  eternal life  for what is worthless  in eternity?

As we learn  to trust  and follow Jesus  in this life,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  there is nothing better  than being  with You!”

Love,
Margaret
