Why  Do You  Spend Money?

People often spend  quite a bit  of money  on junk food  —  even though  they are poor.     It’s puzzling.     They make out  like they don’t  have enough money  for nutritious foods,  but they buy  a lot  of really expensive junk food.     They’re losing out  on their health  and ability  to feel good.     If one were  to ask them  about their poor choice,  the likely reply  would be an angry retort  about how  it is no one’s business.

The same scenario  happens  in one’s choice  about eternal salvation.     People,  in the utter poverty  of their  condemnation  of sins,  will choose idolatry,  philosophy,  atheism,  agnosticism,  witchcraft,  work righteousness,  self-help books,  etc.  rather than choose  free salvation  through the merits  of Jesus Christ.

That is what Isaiah 55:1-3  is talking about  when God Almighty asks us,

“Ho!     Every one  who thirsts,  come to the waters;
And you  who have  no money come,  buy  and eat.
Come,  buy wine  and milk
Without money  and without cost.

Why  do you spend money  for what is  not bread,
And your wages  for what  does not satisfy?
Listen carefully  to Me,  and eat  what is good,
And  delight yourself  in abundance.

Incline  your ear  and come  to Me.
Listen,  that you may live;
And  I will make  an everlasting covenant  with you,
According to  the faithful mercies  shown  to David.”

God wants  to give us  His free salvation  —  if we would  just accept it  as He gives it  —  in faith,  hope,  and love.     Jesus already paid  the full price,  so we don’t need  to try  to earn it.     The things  of this world  can never give us  our real need  for forgiveness  —  and they will all  pass away  with this world  —  so they will never satisfy  our real needs.

Delighting  in what satisfies,  we thankfully say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your free mercies.”

Love,
Margaret
