I Do Not  Ask You  To Take Them Out  Of the World

Jesus prays fervently  for us  in all  of our troubles  and sadnesses.     But He does not pray  as some Christians  might pray  in their anxious times.     Sometimes Christians  are tempted  to pray  that they might  be taken  to heaven  right away  —  instead of having  to face  and endure  their trials.     But,  shortly before His crucifixion,  Jesus prays  for us  in John 17:15,

I do not ask You  to take them out  of the world,  but to keep them  from the evil one.

Chances are  that when a Christian wishes  to be in heaven,  instead of enduring trials  and temptations  on earth,  our Lord  will not grant  that prayer.     And we know  that God  knows all things  —  understands all things  —  and has the best answer  to all things.     God’s purpose  for keeping us on earth  is to be His witnesses  —  to glorify His name  and truth  —  and to grow us  in the true faith,  hope,  and love,  while keeping us  “from the evil one”.

That’s why Mark 8:34  specifically records,

And  He summoned  the crowd  with His disciples,  and said  to them,  “If anyone wishes  to come  after Me,  he must deny himself,  and take up  his cross  and follow Me.”

It’s not just  the disciples  who were  to buck up,  deny themselves,  and serve God  in the truth  of His being.     It’s  “the crowd”  —  and us today.     We should be  amongst those  who truly want  to follow  after Jesus,  because He has proven Himself  to be the prophesied  and true Savior  from all sin.     Whatever  our particular  “cross”  might be,  we are to  accept it  and  “follow”  Jesus  by living  in the way  He showed us  to live.

He has promised to never leave us  or forsake us,  so we joyfully say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for promising  to always  be with us  and protect us  from the evil one.”

Love,
Margaret
