I Put On  Righteousness,  And It  Clothed Me

We wear clothes  for the sake  of modesty  —  to keep protected  from the weather  —  and just  to look nice.     And  in Revelation 3:18,  Jesus advises us  to buy from Him  “white garments”“that the shame  of your nakedness  will not be revealed.”

There are a number  of similar references  about being clothed  in God’s word.     They could include,

I put on  righteousness,  and it clothed me.          Job  29:14

Then he believed  in the LORD;  and He reckoned it  to him  as righteousness.     Genesis  15:6

I will rejoice greatly  in the LORD,
My soul will exult  in my God;
For He has clothed me  with garments  of salvation,
He has wrapped me  with a robe  of righteousness    Isaiah 61:10

Let Your priests  be clothed  with righteousness,
And let Your godly ones sing  for joy.     Psalm 132:9

In each  of these instances,  God shows us  that we need  to be clothed  —  covered up  —  with His “righteousness”,  so that our shameful sins  will not be shown  to everyone  in heaven.     In the Genesis passage above,  Abraham  “believed  in the LORD”  and God counted his faith  as a covering of  “righteousness”.     It’s only  the  “righteousness”  that God gives us  through faith  in Jesus  that can cover up  our sinfulness.

In Job 29:14  above,  when Job recalled  his life  before so many disasters  struck him,  he said his  righteousness”  “clothed”  him.     His “righteousness”  was his faith  in his Redeemer  —  just as it was  for Abraham.     And,  it is the LORD  who leads us  to faith  as we listen  to His word,  promising us eternal salvation  as we turn  to Him  in faith.

We,  too,  put on  faith  in Jesus,  so that  “the shame”  of our  “nakedness  will not be revealed”.      Only then  will we truly  “exult  in my God”  as we know  our sins  are covered.

Exulting,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for freely clothing us.”

Love,
Margaret
