At That Time  My Reason  Returned To Me

Pride  is a most deceitful thing.     In their pride,  people like  to think  they know  and understand  all that is going on  around them.     They like  to control  their sphere  of being.     So,  we take pride  in our accomplishments,  knowledge,  strength,  and possessions.     We knowledgeably claim  that we have  what we have  because of our hard work,  talents,  and expertise.     But,  God shows us  the truth  of our being  in the book  of Daniel.

The Israelites were captives  in exile  in Babylon.     In Daniel 3,  King Nebuchadnezzar  was mightily impressed  with the LORD’s power,  when Shadrach,  Meshach  and Abed-nego  were not the least bit harmed  in his fiery furnace,  after refusing  to bow down  to his gold image.     Nebuchadnezzar immediately declared  that everybody had  to show respect  to the LORD.

But later,  in Daniel 4,  Nebuchadnezzar had a dream  that only Daniel  was able  to interpret.     The dream alluded  to Nebuchadnezzar’s great power  in this world.     But,  it also indicated  that he would be  taken down  from his position,  and become  like an animal  because of his pride.     In Daniel 4:16, the angelic being  in the dream  said,

Let his mind  be changed  from that  of a man,
And let a beast’s mind  be given  to him,
And let seven periods  of time  pass over him.

A year after Daniel  sadly interpreted  this dream  to the king,  the king proudly  gave himself credit  for all  that he had.     Immediately,  he lost his mind  and became  like an animal  —  until he looked  to God  and blessed the LORD  for His dominion  over all things.     Then,  Nebuchadnezzar declared  in Daniel 4:36,

At that time  my reason returned  to me.     And my majesty  and splendor  were restored  to me  for the glory  of my kingdom…….

God gives us  our ability  to think  and be.     That is why  we should never  become proud  and arrogant,  imagining  that we are  in control  of anything.

Much rather,  we turn  to God  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  all glory  is Yours.”

Love,
Margaret
