It Is Like  a Mustard Seed

Jesus had just healed a woman  on a Sabbath day  and was being reprimanded  by the Jewish leaders  for breaking the Sabbath law.     As Jesus showed them how very right it was  to do what  is right  and good  on a Sabbath,  the people  were rejoicing  over the wonderful things  Jesus was doing.     The Jewish leaders  were rejecting  God’s way  —  and the multitude  of worshipers  were rejoicing  over it.     That is when  Luke 13:18-19  records,

Therefore  He was saying,  “What is the kingdom  of God like,  and to what  shall I  compare it?     It is like a mustard seed,  which a man took  and threw  into his own garden;  and it grew  and became a tree;  and the birds  of the air nested  in its branches.”

What Jesus was doing  with His healings,  miracles,  and preaching  was planting the seeds  of God’s truths  in the hearts  and minds  of the people.     The truth is  that God wants us  to do good  every day  of our lives.     Every day  presents opportunities  to be kind,  considerate,  helpful,  loving,  and all  that God wants us  to be.     In the good  that we do,  we are sharing  the love  God has  for us.     That is  another way  of sharing  God’s word  with those around us.

That sharing  and living  as God desires  is like planting seeds  that grow.     As the truths  of God’s word  grow in our heart,  and everyone’s heart,  more good comes from it.     The result is that  “the kingdom  of God”  spreads out  to all  —  gives us all shelter  and a place  to rest  —  and helps each  of us  to grow stronger  in God’s word.

God  has shared  His eternal word  with us  —  His “mustard seed”.     It’s awesome.     We let that grow  within us  through meditating  on it  and believing in it.     We let that  benefit others  around us  —  and so  God’s word spreads  salvation everywhere.

Rejoicing  in God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  grow Your truths  in us.”

Love,
Margaret
