The Good Shepherd  Lays Down  His Life

It’s a rather small percentage  of our population  that has the opportunity  to care  for sheep.     It’s a privilege  to care for them.     King David obviously treasured  the time  he spent shepherding  —  and likened  the LORD God Almighty  as our shepherd,  as the one  who tenderly guides us  and protects us  from harm.

Throughout God’s word  there are references  to our being  like sheep  that need  to be cared for.     We might falsely  make out like  we’re fully capable  of caring for ourselves,  but that is not  the reality  of our lives.     We often make mistakes,  bad decisions,  and fall into  downright sinful  (stupid) rebellions.     We have a tendency  to wander  into dangerous situations  that we are incapable  of getting out of  by ourselves.

The bottom line is  that we need  our Shepherd / Creator / Redeemer  to protect  and guide us  through this life.     It’s comforting  to know  that Jesus  tells us  in John 10:11,

I am the good shepherd;  the good shepherd  lays down  His life  for the sheep.

Jesus has done  so much more  for us  besides caring for us  —  comforting us  —  and guiding us  to eternal life.     He is the  “good shepherd”  who  lays down  His life  for the sheep”.     Because there was no other way  to totally wipe out  all our sins  and make us righteous,  other than making a valid payment  for our sins,  our  “good shepherd”  made  the ultimate payment,  by shedding  His innocent blood.

So,  what do we think  of our  “shepherd”  now?     Are we grateful  for His love,  care,  and sacrifice?     Have we learned  to love Him  for loving us  so sacrificially?     His love  deserves  our best praises  and honor.

As we follow our  “good shepherd”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  it is mighty good  to be in Your tender care.”

Love,
Margaret
