As Those  Who Have Been  Chosen  Of God

In our sinfulness,  we give ourselves  way too much credit  for our changed lives  in Christ Jesus.     “We”  are not the ones  who make ourselves righteous  and fit  for heaven.     Much rather,  it is what God  keeps patiently working  in us,  day after day.     In spite  of our stubborn  sinfulness,  our Savior  is constantly  giving us  gentle leadings  through His word.     Paul describes  our situation  in Colossians 3:12-17,

So,  as those  who have been chosen  of God,  holy  and beloved,  put on a heart  of compassion,  kindness,  humility,  gentleness  and patience;  bearing with one another,  and forgiving each other,  whoever  has a complaint  against anyone;  just as the Lord forgave you,  so also should you.     Beyond all these things  put on love,  which is the perfect bond  of unity.     Let the peace  of Christ rule  in your hearts,  to which  indeed  you were called  in one body;  and be thankful.     Let the word  of Christ  richly dwell  within you,  with all wisdom  teaching  and admonishing one another  with psalms  and hymns  and spiritual songs,  singing  with thankfulness  in your hearts  to God.     Whatever  you do  in word  or deed,  do all  in the name  of the Lord Jesus,  giving thanks  through Him  to God  the Father.

Our changed life  starts  with being  one of  “those  who have been chosen  of God”.     We did not choose God.     He chose us  —  gave us  His words  of salvation  —  gave us eyes  and ears  to recognize  His eternal truths  —  and lets  His Holy Spirit  work  in our hearts,  urging us on  to live lives  of honest faith  and goodness.

We  “put on a heart”  that is more like  the heart  of God,  just because  Christ  keeps on  showing us  His goodness  and patience  with us.     That is what guides us  into living  more as a child  of God  should live.     Because it is Christ working  in us,  we should be responding  by  “singing  with thankfulness  in your hearts  to God”.     Without Christ working  in our hearts,  we could do nothing.     Our good works  would be worthless,  because they would be done  with sneaky,  selfish intents.

Whatever we do,  it can only  be rightly done  giving thanks  through Him  to God the Father”.     It’s not us.     It’s Christ  in us.

Ever thankful,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for condescending  to live  within us.”

Love,
Margaret
