In Peace  I Will  Both Lie Down  And Sleep

When worry  and deep concerns  plague us,  we might toss  and turn  all night long  —  unable  to sleep.     But,  when King David  was being battered  and reproached  by ungodly people,  he sang  in Psalm 4:8,

In peace  I will  both lie down  and sleep,
For You alone,  O Lord,  make me  to dwell  in safety.

When we think  about God’s almighty,  everlasting power  and love,  we remember  just how righteous,  holy,  and merciful  He is.     And,  we don’t just think  about God’s power  and love  for a moment  in the day,  while busy doing other things.     Much rather,  in verse 4,  David tells us to,

Meditate  in your heart  upon your bed,  and be still.

Overwhelming troubles  need  to cause us  to  “be still”.     Slow down  —  get a grip  —  look at  the eternal reality  of things.     We need  to actually  “meditate”  on God’s love  and control  over all things.     Take quiet time  to recollect  all that God  has done  in the past  —  and all  that God  has wondrously worked  in bringing us a Savior,  just as He promised.     Thoroughly consider  the kind  of awesome power  God has displayed  throughout history,  as He has worked  to bring us  eternal salvation.     There has never been  another power  that can match God’s power.     That’s something  to think about.

So,  instead  of complaining,  fearing,  and doubting,  David tells us  in verse 5,

Offer  the sacrifices  of righteousness,
And trust  in the Lord.

It might  be hard  —  but,  it is only decent  to  “offer the sacrifices  of righteousness,  and trust  in the Lord.”     A “sacrifice”  is the giving  of our very best  to the LORD.     “Righteousness”  is doing what is right  —  which is having faith  in God  and giving Him  the respect  that is due  to His holy name.     So,  our  “sacrifice”  is  to honestly praise God  in the midst  of our troubles.

Awed  by God’s faithful love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for the peace  of Your holy love  in Christ.”

Love,
Margaret
