Their Gifts

When interacting  with God,  gifts are expressions  of love  —  it’s the love  that makes the gift special.     The Bible gives us many examples  of true gifts  from the heart  —  along with the ultimate gift  of God’s forgiveness  and eternal life  through faith  in our Lord Jesus.     Two examples  of people showing God their love include:

And He looked up  and saw the rich putting  their gifts  into the treasury.     And He saw  a poor widow putting in  two small copper coins.     And He said,  “Truly  I say  to you,  this poor widow put  in more  than all  of them;  for they all  out of their surplus  put into the offering;  but she  out of her poverty  put in all  that she had  to live on.”       Luke 21:1-4

Now when Jesus  was in Bethany,  at the home of Simon  the leper,  a woman came  to Him  with an alabaster vial  of very costly perfume,  and she poured it  on His head  as He reclined  at the table.     But the disciples  were indignant  when they saw this,  and said,  “Why this waste?     For this perfume might have been sold  for a high price  and the money given  to the poor.”     But Jesus,  aware  of this,  said to them,  “Why do you bother  the woman?     For she has done a good deed  to Me.     For you always have the poor  with you;  but you do not always have Me.     For when she poured  this perfume  on My body,  she did it  to prepare Me  for burial.     Truly  I say  to you,  wherever this gospel  is preached  in the whole world,  what this woman has done will also  be spoken of  in memory  of her.”       Matthew 26:6-13

These gifts differ  in size  and worldly value,  but the value  of the love expressed  is the same.     As we read  God’s word,  we see  the immense value  and faithfulness  of God’s love  for us.     So,  John 3:16 says,

For God  so loved  the world,  that He gave  His only begotten Son,  that whoever believes  in Him  shall not perish,  but have eternal life.

As we celebrate  Christ’s love  on the cross  and the resurrection,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for the most wondrous gift  of love  ever known.”

Love,
Margaret
