Everyone  Who Is  of the Truth

We probably  like to fancy ourselves  as lovers  of the truth.     That makes us  strut around  a bit  —  hold our heads  up high  —  feel good about ourselves.     But,  when it comes  to boldly standing up  for the truth,  we chicken out.

Pilate appeared  to be looking  for the truth  as he questioned Jesus.     But,  he didn’t really want  to face  the truth.     It seemed scary  and quite daring.     To believe Jesus  and stand up  for the truth  would mean  facing the wrath  of the Jewish religious leaders.     It might also mean  putting his political standing  in jeopardy.     Although Pilate  plainly said  he found  no fault  in Jesus,  he didn’t  really believe Jesus’ claim  of being a king  of a different realm  than that  of the world.

Pilate didn’t really accept the “truth”  of Jesus being  from God.     He probably felt  Jesus was  an innocent,  harmless,  poor preacher  of inconsequential beliefs.     So,  when Pilate pressed Jesus with,  “So You  are a king?”  Jesus answered  in John 18:37,

You say correctly  that I am a king.     For this I have been born,  and for this  I have come  into the world,  to bear witness  to the truth.     Everyone  who is  of the truth  hears My voice.

In other words,  if Pilate  is not  of the “truth”,  he will refuse  to believe Jesus.     We either believe Jesus  —  or we don’t.     If we honestly care  about  “truth”,  we will  hear  what Jesus  has to say  to us  in His word.      We will study  God’s word  to discover  its truthfulness.     Then,  listening  to God’s invitation  in Isaiah 55:3  will bless us,

Incline  your ear  and come  to Me.
Listen,  that you may live;
And I will make  an everlasting covenant  with you,
According to the faithful mercies shown  to David.

We rest  in God’s  “covenant”  of  “faithful mercies”  and “truth”,  saying,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You are  our most wondrous Savior.”

Love,
Margaret
