He Went  And Made Proclamation  to the Spirits

Jesus did not just lay dead  in the grave  during those three days.     He was busy preaching.     1 Peter 3:18-20 tells us,

For Christ  also died  for sins  once for all,  the just  for the unjust,  so that He might bring us  to God,  having been put  to death  in the flesh,  but made alive  in the spirit;  in which also  He went  and made proclamation  to the spirits now  in prison,  who once were disobedient…….

Jesus preached His victory  over sin  to those condemned  to eternal hell.     They needed  to know  and be convicted  of the truth  that God  is a God  of His word.     Their disobedience  and unbelief  has no power  over the authority  of the LORD God.     That is why Colossians 2:15 says,

When He had disarmed  the rulers  and authorities,  He made a public display  of them,  having triumphed  over them  through Him.

Christ’s power  over sin,  death,  and the devil  was displayed victoriously  to all those  who had rejected the LORD God  during their lifetimes  on earth.     They had imagined themselves  to be wise,  strong,  and authoritative  while  on earth,  but Jesus showed them  that their imaginations  were a waste.     Because  there is no other LORD  or God,  “He made a public display  of them,  having triumphed  over them  through Him.”     That was Jesus’  “proclamation  to the spirits  now  in prison,  who once were disobedient.”

In hell,  they were ashamed  of themselves  as they saw the glory  of Jesus’ authority,  holiness,  and power  over all things.     And so,  Hosea and 1 Corinthians 15:55  joyfully declare,

O death,  where is your victory?     O death,  where  is your sting?

Because  of Christ’s suffering,  death,  and resurrection  we don’t need  to be sad  over death.     God is in control.     In awe,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  great is Your name  forever.”

Margaret
