You  Who Have Shown Me  Many Troubles  And Distresses

Old people  have many memories.     They will tell  of many experiences,  times  of joy and sorrow,  disasters  and blessings.     Those  who have lived  with faith  in Christ Jesus  will say  with the old psalmist  in Psalm 71:20,

You  who have shown me  many troubles  and distresses
Will revive me again,
And will bring me  up again  from the depths  of the earth.

When this old man  reviewed his life,  he had  a great appreciation  of God’s almighty sovereignty,  love,  mercy,  and faithfulness  throughout his time  on earth.     He certainly  had experienced  “many troubles  and distresses”.     But,  God had repeatedly shown  His faithfulness,  and this old man  had learned  a sure lesson  in his lifetime  —  God  will revive me  again”.

In every trouble,  God lifted him up again  and put him  on a sure footing again,  so that he  could face life again  with a stronger faith  in our Savior.     This old psalmist  even remembered  his early youth  and recollected  how God was teaching him  even way back then.

Not everybody learns  the lessons  this old psalmist learned.     Instead,  as unbelievers,  they are bitter,  suspicious,  afraid,  and refusing  to trust  the LORD.     They don’t appreciate  the many times  that God  brought them out  of their  “troubles  and distresses”.     Instead,  they imagine  that their own ingenuity  and strength saved them.

But,  this old psalmist  of faith  was filled  with joy  and trust  as he knew  God would also  “bring me  up again  from the depths  of the earth”.     He knew  that his earthly death  is not  an eternal death.     Instead,  he would be resurrected  unto eternal life  with his LORD  and Savior.     May we know God  as he knew God.

Acknowledging  our Savior  for who He is,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for being  ever near  throughout our lives.”

Love,
Margaret
