Neither Useless  Nor Unfruitful

Most everyone  wants  to feel useful  and worthwhile  in this life.     We don’t want  to feel  like a worthless,  good-for-nothing waste  in this life.     The apostle Peter  doesn’t want us  to have  wasted lives either.     So,  he gives us  some responsibilities  to guide us  into making ourselves useful.     First,  Peter reminds us  that we surely do  have a Savior  —  Jesus Christ.     He tells us  that because  Jesus is our Savior,  we have every reason  to strive  to live  according to Jesus’ promises,  as we look forward  to our home  in heaven.

Then Peter explains  how we should strive  to be  the very best child  of God  that we can be.     He writes  in 2 Peter 1:5-8,

Now  for this very reason also,  applying all diligence,  in your faith  supply moral excellence,   and in your moral excellence,  knowledge,   and in your knowledge,  self-control,   and in your self-control,  perseverance,   and in your perseverance,  godliness,   and in your godliness,  brotherly kindness,   and in your brotherly kindnesslove.      For if  these qualities  are yours  and are increasing,  they render you  neither useless  nor unfruitful  in the true knowledge  of our Lord Jesus Christ.

These life characteristics  are describing  a real faith  in the fact  that Christ Jesus  has totally paid  for all our sins  and  that He desires  that we now live  the way a child  of God  should live  to honor  our Lord.     When we live  in the kind of love  Christ has  for us,  we will be doing things  that honor God.     Lives  that honor God  are “neither useless  nor unfruitful”,  whatever  our job  or life situation  might be.

In our various  earthly jobs,  we will be serving  God’s purpose  for us  on earth.     Glad in living  for our Lord,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  let our days  glorify Your love  for us.”

Love,
Margaret
