Because  They Did Not Believe  in God

God often uses parables  and illustrations  in the Bible  to teach us  the vital truths  we need  to know.     A parable  is some sort  of similitude  meant to form  some decent moral standards  in our lives.     As we look  at this world,  it is obvious  that we are all always  in great need  of some decent moral standards  for our lives.

Asaph,  the writer  of Psalm 78,  invites readers  to learn  from his parable.     In his parable,  he highlights  the history  of the Israelites  —  how God rescued them  from slavery  —  through many miracles  led them  to the promised land,  in spite of  their many rebellions  —  and drove out  their enemies,  so they could have  a beautiful land  to live in.

In spite of  God’s constant  and faithful love,  the Israelites kept falling away  from faith  in the LORD.     They always  got suckered  into idol worship,  and sins  of all sorts.     Asaph says  in Psalm 78:21-22,

Therefore  the LORD heard  and was full  of wrath,
And a fire  was kindled  against Jacob,
And anger  also mounted  against Israel;
Because they did not believe  in God,
And did not trust  in His salvation.

All  of their idolatry,  complaining,  rebellion,  greed,  lying,  and blatant sinfulness  was based  on the fact  that  they did not believe  in God,  and did not trust  in His salvation.”

Lo,  and behold!     Isn’t that  just the way  it still is today  in regards  to Christians?

God was so angry  with Israel’s  unbelief  and lack  of trust  that He allowed Israel’s worst enemies  to take them captive.     How might God  be forced  to act today  with those who claim  to be Christian,  but do  not believe in God  and do  “not trust  in His salvation”?

As we allow ourselves  to learn  from Asaph’s parable,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your patient,  faithful love.     Please create  in us clean hearts  and very right spirits,  to Your glory.”

Love,
Margaret
