He Is a Rewarder

He Is  a Rewarder

We all like  to be rewarded  for our efforts.     When we work hard  at our jobs,  it’s nice  to receive  our paycheck  —  and maybe  even a bonus.     Students  like  to receive  good grades  for their efforts  —  and maybe a star  or some other sign  of approval.

But,  often  we are not rewarded  or given a sign  of approval  when it would be  so nice  to receive one.     Then,  we just keep on working  and doing our best  because we know  God’s righteousness.     We look ahead  to the good  that will someday  result  from our work  —  like a farmer  looking ahead  to the results  of his hard work.

When the book  of Hebrews  lists so many  of God’s children  of faith,  who directed  their whole life  to being true  to God  —  but  suffering persecutions,  mockings,  and even death  —  it says  something stunning  in Hebrews 11:39-40,

And  all these,  having gained approval  through their faith,  did not receive  what was promised,  because God had provided  something better  for us,  so that apart  from us  they would not  be made perfect.

What?!     They  “did not receive  what was promised”?     Instead of  instant rewards  here on earth  for their faith  and righteousness,  many had  to endure sufferings  and death.     But,  they believed  in God  through it all  —  and then were  “made perfect”  in God’s eyes  —  and received  an eternal life  of better blessings.

Jesus taught  that many believers  would suffer persecutions  on earth  before receiving eternal life.     Whatever our life here  is like,  we can be  most sure  of the truths  in Hebrews 11:6,

And  without faith  it is impossible  to please Him,  for he who comes  to God  must believe  that He is  and  that He is a rewarder  of those  who seek Him.

The reward  for faith  far surpasses  our expectations  because  “God  had provided  something better  for us”,  who “seek Him”.     Knowing His goodness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You do all things well.”

Love,
Margaret
