They Hate Me  With Violent Hatred

King David  experienced a whole lot  of vicious hatred.     It’s one thing  to be shown hatred  through slander,  which hurts  so deeply  —  and it’s even worse  when the hateful  have such an intense hatred  that they are out  to kill  a person.     David experienced  all sorts  of hatred  through no fault  of his own.     So,  he wrote  in Psalm 25:19,

Look  upon my enemies,  for they are many,
And they hate me  with violent hatred.

David did not suffer  from being hated  because he had some evil,  nasty,  unforgivable ways  about him.     His enemies hated him  because he was  specifically  God’s chosen man,  anointed to be  the king  of Israel.     They didn’t like  his godliness  —  the way he sought  God’s ways  and precepts  all the time.

In many ways,  David’s sufferings  with enemies  was similar  to Jesus’ sufferings  —  and the sufferings  of all  of God’s children.     That is why  Jesus tells us  in Luke 6:22,

Blessed  are you  when men hate you,  and ostracize you,  and insult you,  and scorn  your name  as evil,  for the sake  of the Son  of Man.

Many people  of the world  hate godliness  because  they imagine  that the good,  faithful child  of God  is always  judging them  and condemning them  for their sins.     Actually,  it is their own guilt  that is judging them.     It’s all  in their own hearts  and minds  and they don’t want  to deal  with their own guilt.

Jesus doesn’t want us  to take this  unjustified hatred  too personally,  so  He teaches us  in Luke 10:16,

The one  who listens  to you  listens  to Me,  and the one  who rejects you  rejects Me;  and he  who rejects Me  rejects  the One  who sent Me.

The bottom line is  that these worldly people  hate God  and His ways.     They  take their hatred out  on believers  because they cannot  reach God.     But,  God  has promised  to always be with  His children.     For that  we rejoice,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for the wonder  and beauty  of Your saving love.”

Love,
Margaret
