I Would Have Despaired

With all the bad stuff  going on,  people can easily think  of reasons  for justifying their despair  in many situations.     One might even raise their eyebrows  and wonder about what King David said  in Psalm 27:13,

I would have  despaired  unless I had believed  that I would see  the goodness  of the LORD
In the land  of the living.

Just think.     David had very  “good”  reasons  for despairing  in his desperate situation.     But,  he didn’t despair.     He didn’t have to.     Instead,  he knew  and  “believed”  that he  “would see  the goodness  of the LORD  in the land  of the living”.

Earth  was not David’s home.     He realized  that heaven  was his home  —  “in the land  of the living”.     The “living”  are those  who believe  and trust  in the LORD.     Their eternal home is  “the land  of the living”  —  heaven  —  because they are spiritually alive  through faith  in the LORD.

David  and all God’s faithful mentioned  in the Bible  are witnesses  of God’s victory  on our behalf.     So,  Hebrews 12:1-2 explains  why we should not despair, but believe  that we will see  our LORD  and all His people  “in the land  of the living”.     It says,

Therefore,  since we have  so great  a cloud  of witnesses  surrounding us,  let us also  lay aside  every encumbrance  and the sin  which so easily entangles us,  and let us run  with endurance  the race  that is set  before us,  fixing our eyes  on Jesus,  the author  and perfecter  of faith,  who  for the joy  set before Him  endured the cross,  despising the shame,  and has sat down  at the right hand  of the throne  of God.

When bad stuff happens,  let us dwell on Jesus  and  “the goodness  of the LORD”  in heaven.     There we will joyfully say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your strength  and faithfulness  have carried us home.”

Love,
Margaret
