Woe to You!

Woe  to You!

The word  “woe”  is an exclamation  of utter grief  and alas.     It’s an exclamation  of sorrow,  pity,  and regret.     Today,  the speaker might be saying something like,  “Aaaach!     You’re going down the tube!     Get your head on straight!”

When Jesus said,  “Woe!”  He wanted  the people  to realize  they were  on the fast track  to hell.     It was Jesus’  tough love  for everyone  that led Him  to openly  point out  their personal sins  that would condemn them  forever.     Jesus did not tip toe  around their sins  in fear  of offending them.     Their eternal life  was at stake.     So,  Jesus said  in Matthew 23:13,

But woe  to you,  scribes  and Pharisees,  hypocrites,  because you shut off  the kingdom  of heaven  from people;  for you do not enter in yourselves,  nor do you allow those  who are entering  to go in.

Jesus pointed out  many different sins  in that bold manner.     Why?     Because these self-righteous people  were “hypocrites”  and didn’t seem  to realize it.     They easily fooled  other people,  and maybe even themselves,  but God Almighty  can never  be fooled.

In proclaiming  “woe”  to them,  Jesus  was living the gracious,  tender love  He preached  for our salvation.     In Luke 6:27,  Jesus said,

But  I say  to you  who hear,  love your enemies,  do good  to those  who hate you.

Those “hypocrites”  hated Jesus  to the point of crucifying Him.     They didn’t want  their sins revealed  —  but that was the only way  to save them  from eternal condemnation  —  if they would just repent.     And there were some  who did listen  and repent.

Today,  the world hates Christians  who honestly live  as Christians.     We’re in the same boat  as Jesus was.     Jesus says  in Luke 6:22,

Blessed are you  when men hate you,  and ostracize you,  and insult you,  and scorn  your name  as evil,  for the sake  of the Son  of Man.

It is in love  for our “enemies”  that we stick  to the truths  of God Almighty  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for lovingly  setting us  on the right track.”

Love,
Margaret
