They  Have Not Exposed  Your Iniquity

When the prophet Jeremiah  wrote the book  of Lamentations,  he had a lot  to lament about.     He was so sad  about the gross sins  of the Israelites  —  and was hurt even more  as they refused  to listen  to his warnings.     In Lamentations 2:14-15,  Jeremiah  sadly told the people,

Your prophets  have seen  for you
False  and foolish visions;
And they have not exposed  your iniquity
So as  to restore you  from captivity,
But they have seen  for you  false and misleading oracles.

All  who pass along the way
Clap their hands  in derision  at you;
They hiss  and shake their heads
At the daughter  of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city  of which they said,  ‘The perfection  of beauty,
A joy  to all the earth’?”

The popular preachers  of the day  never  “exposed”  the  “iniquity”  of the Israelites.     They preferred preaching  only good things,  so that the people  would like them.     It was more entertaining  to talk about their  “false and foolish visions”  that everything would be fine.     Their false preaching  was so silly  and  “misleading”  that it could not  “restore”  the Israelites  “from captivity”.     Nobody was led  to be sorry  about their sins.

Jerusalem  was ready  to fall  because  of their sins.     But,  the false preachers still refused   to expose  the “iniquity”  of the Israelites.     Soon  the Babylonians  would be mocking  the Israelites  and their beloved Jerusalem  —  “The perfection of beauty,  a joy  to all the earth”.

Everyone needs  to have their  “iniquity”  “exposed”.     That is the only way  we can  be led  to a right repentance.     As we read  God’s word,  God has much  to tell us  about our sins  and our only means  of receiving forgiveness  and eternal life  through faith  in Christ Jesus.     Since many preachers today  do not expose iniquity,  we need  to have  an even greater diligence  in learning  straight from God  in the Bible.

As God gladly teaches us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your loving care  and guidance  are awesome!”

Love,
Margaret
