Rooted  And Grounded  in Love

Do we really know  what real love is  according  to God?     It’s not  just  a feeling.     It’s totally opposite  from lust  —  although the world thinks only  in terms  of lust.     Love is not self-serving.     It has nothing  to do  with satisfying  our personal desires  for gratification.     The kind  of love  that God has  is actually  far beyond  human comprehension.

When Paul prayed  for the Ephesian congregation,  he asked  in Ephesians 3:17-19,

…….that Christ may dwell  in your hearts  through faith;  and that you,  being rooted  and grounded  in love,  may be able  to comprehend  with all the saints  what is the breadth  and length  and height  and depth,  and to know  the love  of Christ  which surpasses knowledge,  that you may be filled up  to all the fullness  of God.

Love dwells  in the heart.      It includes  a deep affection  and care  for the well-being  of another.     Since  “the love  of Christ”  “surpasses knowledge”,  there is no way  for us  in our humanity  to fully understand  God’s love  for us.     Nevertheless,  Paul prays  that all Christians  would be able  “to comprehend”  “the breadth  and length  and height  and depth”  of God’s love  in Christ.

We’ve got  a lot  of learning  to do.

Knowing and remembering  that we are loved  with a love  that  “surpasses knowledge”,  we realize  that we are being loved  even in the midst  of our deepest woes.     When we moan something  about God not loving us  in our troubles,  that simply  is not true.     God loves all those  who believe  in Him  —  although He  allows them  to endure troubles,  and even be martyred.

We pray  “that Christ may dwell”  in our “hearts” as we remember 1 John 4:16,

God is love,  and the one  who abides  in love  abides  in God,  and God abides  in him.

We “abide in God”  as we strive  to be  “rooted  and grounded  in love”  —  God’s love,  which dwells “in your hearts through faith”.     That means abiding  in God’s word,  so we may come  to know Him better  and grow  in faith,  hope,  and love.

Thankful  for God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for loving us first  that we might become rooted and grounded  in Your love.”

Love,
Margaret
