To Hold Them  in Check

People have  all sorts  of critters  that they dearly love  and need  to hold  “in check”.     There are horses,  mules,  dogs,  cats,  birds,  elephants,  sheep,  goats,  pot-bellied pigs,  you name it.     God made them all.     And,  they all need  a sure guidance  in acting appropriately  amongst the people  who care  for them.     Their training  takes time,  patience,  understanding  —  and often special equipment  to assist  their behaviors.

Each critter  has their own personality  and needs  for guidance.     Sometimes  they simply have  a silly,  mystifying stubbornness  that dominates  their lack  of obedience.     Their Creator  —  who is also  our Creator  —  talks about them  as He  desires  to teach us.     Our LORD says  in Psalm 32:9,

Do not be  as the horse  or as the mule  which have no understanding,
Whose trappings  include bit  and bridle  to hold them  in check,
Otherwise  they will not come near  to you.

God is telling us  —  His critters  —  to “not”  be like some  of His stubborn critters  who  “have no understanding”.     The LORD gifted us  with more intelligence  and a conscience  that is fully able  to guide us  —  if we choose  to allow it.     Our intelligence  enables us   to invent  all sorts  of gadgets,  live in special homes,  and communicate  in details far beyond  the understanding  and capabilities  of animals.

That means  we have brains  that can fully comprehend  the love,  goodness,  holiness,  and authority  of God.     We just stubbornly refuse  to live  according  to our Maker’s  good will.     Our sin  is ruling  over us  because we’re not trusting  in our LORD.     That’s being unreasonably silly.

Living according  to God’s word  and salvation  gives us everything good  for all eternity.     It doesn’t make sense  to refuse  all the goodness  that our heart longs for.     So,  God tells us,  “Do not be  as the horse  or as the mule  which have no understanding.”     Let us gladly serve  the LORD  with rejoicing  as we enjoy  His forgiveness  and love.

With joy  we recognize  and trust  God’s love  for us  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for Your patient love.”

Love,
Margaret
