A Covenant  to the People

In the Bible,  a “covenant”  refers  to the recorded promises  of God  to mankind  —  including all  of us.     These binding,  eternal promises  are in regards  to Christ Jesus  and our salvation  through faith  in Him.     Because God  is most holy  and righteous,  we can be most assured  He will never break  His promises.     That fact  is so trustworthy  we can really rest  in it  —  and find relief  for our concerns  about eternal life.

In Isaiah 42:5-8,  where God Almighty speaks  of our Savior,  it records,

Thus says God  the LORD,
Who created the heavens  and stretched them out,
Who spread out  the earth  and its offspring,
Who gives breath  to the people  on it
And spirit  to those  who walk  in it,
“I am the LORD,  I have called You  in righteousness,
I will also  hold You  by the hand  and watch  over You,
And I will appoint You  as a covenant  to the people,
As a light  to the nations,
To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners  from the dungeon
And those  who dwell  in darkness  from the prison.
I am the LORD,  that is My name;
I will not give My glory  to another,
Nor My praise  to graven images.”

The LORD  is definitely identified  here  as the actual Creator  of all things  —  and the one  who gives us life.     And,  Jesus is identified as God’s  “covenant  to the people”.     Jesus alone  has been promised  to be the one  to deliver us.     We are blinded  by our sinful ways  —  Jesus shows us  our sins  and what we should do  as good  and right,  and His promise  of forgiveness.

We are all imprisoned  by our sins  and are doomed  to die eternally  because of them  —  Jesus sets us free  by having paid the penalty  for all of our sins  through His suffering  and death  on the cross.     His resurrection  displays  the  “glory”  of God’s power  to make us holy  through faith  in Jesus.

Jesus is both the promised  and the fulfilled  “covenant”  that gives us real reason  to  “praise”  God  by saying,  “Hallelujah!     Thank You,  LORD,  for Your fulfilled covenant  that saves us eternally.”

Margaret
