When  the Human Heart  Does Not Verify

We all have beliefs  that we have chosen  to accept.     In the days  of idols  and superstitions,  many untruths  were just accepted  and believed.     Their acceptance  did not make them true.

So,  we must ask ourselves,  what happens  when the human heart  does not verify  what it hears?     What is it  that makes people believe  only what is  in their own feelings  and traditions?

Acts 17 gives  an account  to think about.   Paul preached several weeks  to the Thessalonians  about Jesus being our Savior.     Some believed  —  but some jealous,  unbelieving Jews  gathered wicked men  from the market place  to form a mob  against Paul.     But,  the Christians helped Paul escape  and he went  to Berea  to preach.     The Bereans listened  with great interest,  and Acts 17:11-12 says  they were,

…….examining the Scriptures daily  to see whether these things were so.     Therefore many  of them believed…

We need  to think about that.     These people believed   because   they daily examined “the Scriptures”  “to see whether these things  were so”.     They chose  to not believe Paul  just because  he was preaching.     They believed Paul  after they had verified  in the Scriptures  that Paul  really was telling  the truth.

But,  what was happening  in the hearts  and minds  of the Jews,  who did not verify  the things  Paul preached?     Only holding onto  their traditions  and feelings,  they became overtly angry  and hateful.     They were fearful  and jealous  of being shown  that they were not righteous  in their beliefs.

So  —  what happens  in our hearts  and minds  when we  very much  want something  to be true  in this life?     Do we  hold onto  our feelings  and traditions?     Or do we honestly want  to know the truth?     Are we willing  to examine  “the Scriptures daily  to see whether these things  were so.”

Believing the Scriptures  rather than feelings,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your eternal word  proves itself  to be true!”

Love,
Margaret
