Do Not  Refuse Him  Who Is Speaking

In any number  of ways,  we get warnings  from other people  in this life.     They could be teachers,  parents,  friends,  preachers,  whoever.     Maybe we’ll listen  —  maybe we won’t.

The writer  of the book of Hebrews  spent a lot of time explaining  how Jesus is surely  the proven,  promised Savior.     He explained  just how it is  that Jesus is the fulfillment  of all the Old Testament prophecies  about a Savior.     And,  he explained  how it is  that Jesus’  suffering,  death,  and resurrection  are the one-and-only way  to save people  from the consequences  of their sins.

After all that explanation,  he staunchly warned all  of us,  in Hebrews 12:25-29,

See to it  that you do not refuse Him  who is speaking.     For  if those  did not escape  when they refused him  who warned them  on earth,  much less will we escape  who turn away  from Him  who warns  from heaven.     And His voice shook  the earth then,  but now  He has promised,  saying,  “Yet once more  I will shake  not only the earth,  but also the heaven.”

This expression,  “Yet once more,”  denotes the removing  of those things  which can be shaken,  as of created things,  so that  those things  which cannot be shaken  may remain.     Therefore,  since we receive  a kingdom  which cannot be shaken,  let us show gratitude,  by which  we may offer  to God  an acceptable service  with reverence  and awe;  for our God  is a consuming fire.

This warning demands sensible attention.     God is speaking.     Everyone will be made  to tremble  and fear  as all creation will be removed.     But heaven  will remain  for all eternity  because it “cannot be shaken”.     Because heaven  is the inheritance  of all believers,  we need to  “show gratitude”  and  “offer  to God  an acceptable service  with reverence  and awe“.

If we hold back  a rightful  “gratitude”,  we need  to realize that  “our God  is a consuming fire”.     God will judge all  in holy righteousness.

Treasuring God’s loving warning,  we don’t hold back  our gratitude,  but say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  keep us  in Your loving care  as all is shaken.”

Love,
Margaret
