The LORD  Is Near  to the Brokenhearted

Most people want  to have God near  to help them  in times  of trouble.     King David realized  a very important aspect  of having God near,  so he wrote  in Psalm 34:17-18,

The righteous cry,  and the LORD hears
And delivers them out  of all their troubles.
The LORD  is near  to the brokenhearted
And saves those  who are crushed  in spirit.

Throughout  God’s word,  we learn  that  “the righteous”  are those  who believe  and trust  in God.     Their faith  makes them  “righteous”  in God’s eyes.      These  “righteous”  people are also deemed  “righteous”  in God’s eyes  because they are  “brokenhearted”  and “crushed  in spirit”.

That does not mean  that they are always crying,  sad,  depressed,  or anything  of that sort.     Much rather,  they are happy  and joyful  in the LORD.     But,  in the same breath,  they are appalled  and sad  over their sins.     Their sadness  over their sins  is not a feeling  of fear  over whatever consequences  they might have to face  due to their sins.     They are sad  because God deserves  a much better behavior  from all of His children.

God has loved us  so compassionately  in Christ Jesus.     For all His outpouring  of love,  the very least anyone  should do  is  to live according to  God’s love.     But,  we all fail repeatedly.

Unbelievers tend  to just shrug their shoulders  and think nothing  of their sinful natures.     But,  the  “righteous”  are “brokenhearted”  and  “crushed  in spirit”  for having hurt  God’s tender love.     The  “righteous”  do not like their sins  —  hence their broken hearts  and crushed spirits.

So,  the LORD  draws “near  to the brokenhearted”  to comfort them  with forgiveness  and strength  to continue living  for God.     With forgiveness  God  “saves those  who are crushed  in spirit”.     Knowing God’s love  and forgiveness,  the “righteous”  are delivered  for all eternity.

With the LORD’s nearness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for Your grace.”

Love,
Margaret
