He Who Hates Disguises It With His Lips
It seems the longer one lives, the more they see the deceitfulness of this world. Deceitfulness has existed since the Garden of Eden, but the more God’s children experience it, the more disturbed they become over it. It seems there is no end to any of the deceits of this world. In every walk of life — in every level of authority — in every part of society — in every corner of the earth — there are those who deceive.
We ask ourselves, “Why?” Why do they work so hard to purposely deceive? Why are their whole lives lived around deceitfulness? Proverbs 26:24 gives us the bottom line.
He who hates disguises it with his lips,
But he lays up deceit in his heart.
Hatred is the basis for “deceit”. Deceivers hate God’s ways — goodness — righteousness — truth — freedom for all — contentment — obedience to God — worshiping our Creator/Redeemer — you name it, anything good and right. In all of his hatred, the deceiver must disguise his hate “with his lips”. In his greed for power and the stuff of this world, he imagines he must put down others to satisfy his greed.
So, as “he lays up deceit in his heart”, he is making plans to undermine and gradually destroy all that is good. He must disguise his hatred, so he lies “with his lips”. His words seem so good and promising, so loving and caring — but he is secretly planning destruction.
Christians do not need to worry and fret. Psalm 55:23 says,
But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction;
Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days.
But I will trust in You.
Our LORD knows everyone’s thoughts and intentions. He is the eternal, righteous Judge of all.
Resting in God’s care, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for lighting our way to honestly know Christ Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer.”
Love,
Margaret
