When  You Were Pagans

Most everybody  has come  from a pagan background  of some sort  or another.     Depending on our ethnic background,  our ancestors served  all sorts  of idols,  superstitions,  myths,  and falsehoods.     As Christianity spread,  people left their idolatrous practices  —  because they saw  and understood  the proven truths  in God’s word.     They rejoiced  and were glad  to know  God’s truths.

But,  time  and temptations  have eroded  the faith  of some people.     After hundreds  of years,  their families stopped  worshiping God,  and eventually,  to fill the void  of God  in their lives,  some have been now  turning back  to the heathen gods  of their ancestors.     They are again  making sacrifices  to idols  and performing  superstitious rituals.     They are even gaining recognition  for their religious rights  as they serve time  in a penitentiary  or in the military.

In 1 Corinthians 12:2,  Paul wrote,

You know  that when you were pagans,  you were led astray  to the mute idols,  however you were led.

People tend  to imagine  that their intelligence  will enable them  to do what  is best.     But,  that has not proven  to be true.     After Paul explained  how easily  confident people fall  into temptation  and idolatry,  he wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:12-14,

Therefore  let him  who thinks  he stands  take heed  that he does not fall.     No temptation  has overtaken you  but such  as is common  to man;  and God  is faithful,  who will not allow you  to be tempted  beyond  what you are able,  but with the temptation  will provide  the way  of escape also,  so that you will  be able  to endure it.

Therefore,  my beloved,  flee  from idolatry.

God certainly is faithful  in providing a way out  of all our temptations.     But,  are we so rebellious  that we refuse  to follow  His leading?     Do we imagine ourselves smarter  than God Almighty?     So many  are being foolishly arrogant  these days.

True wisdom loves  the proven truths  of the LORD,  and says,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for proving  the authenticity  of Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
