The Tamarack Ring
This morning I had to go to the clinic. While approaching the door on the narrow sidewalk, an old man was coming my way. He stepped to the side and said, “Young ladies first.”
I laughingly replied, “I’m so far from young. May I still pass?”
He said, “Yes ma’am, and here is a ring for your pleasant smile and being willing to greet me.”
He gave me the ring pictured above that he had carved from a Tamarack tree and said he likes to spend his time carving toys and other objects to give away. Because of his age, I imagine he could be a widower and that his children might not live nearby. Carving things is a pleasant way for him to fill his time.
We had a very nice visit about him being in the Navy years ago and about the pleasantness of carving things. This was a very nice encounter in which we made each other’s day more special. Several times he said, “Never lose your pleasant ways. Never lose your wonderful smile. You made my day….. Remember — everyone needs someone pleasant to make their day.”
Needless to say, he made my day special. Such pleasantness is spoken of in Proverbs 16:24,
Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
We not only need to be pleasant to those we meet — but we also need to be pleasant every day in God’s presence. Psalm 147:1 says,
Praise the LORD!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
Remembering God’s sacrificial love for us in Christ Jesus, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, blessed be Your name for Your lovingkindness day by day.”
Love,
Margaret
