Do Not  Give the Devil  an Opportunity

When Paul wrote  to the new Christians  of Ephesus,  he described the differences  between their former lives  of sensuality,  greediness,  and impurity  —  and what their new life  in Christ  should be like.     They needed  to get rid  of their lusts,  falsehood,  lovelessness,  and deceit.     Paul instructed them  to be truthful  and loving  in their Christian lives.

And,  Paul acknowledged  that in their struggles  to live a godly life,  they might  become angry  with one another,  but needed  to follow  God’s word  in dealing  with their anger  —  because human anger  often  leads  to more sin.     Paul wrote  in Ephesians 4:26-27,

Be angry,  and yet  do not sin;  do not let the sun  go down  on your anger,  and do not  give the devil  an opportunity.

Sometimes  our anger can be legitimate  in God’s eyes.     We know  God becomes angry  with our continual  desire  to sin  —  and His anger  is righteous  because it is an expression  of His love  and concern  for our eternal salvation.     Altogether  too often  our anger  is based  on our worldly,  self-centered desires  —  not on a loving concern  for another’s spiritual welfare.     That’s the difference  between a sinful anger  and a righteous anger.

If we let ourselves  be angry  all the time,  we are giving  “the devil  an opportunity”  to lead us  into greater sins.     In such sin,  we might even justify  whatever evil things  we do.     The more we justify  our sins,  the farther  we are moving away  from God,  His forgiveness,  and His righteousness.

God’s children need  to trust God’s righteousness  to set things right  in the end.     Therefore,  Romans 12:19  says,

Never take your own revenge,  beloved,  but leave room  for the wrath  of God,  for it is written,  “Vengeance is Mine,  I will repay,”  says the LORD.

Trusting  our righteous  heavenly Father,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for leading us  in the wonders  of Your love.”

Love,
Margaret
