What Proceeds Out  of the Mouth

Christ,  our Lord and Savior,  has a whole lot  of patience  with people.     With His patience  is a whole lot  of love  —  love that strongly condemns us  when we want  to insist  on working our way down  to hell  —  love that seeks  to save us  before hell  becomes a reality  for us.

The Pharisees  were noted  for making man-made rules  contrary  to God’s word.     One such rule  condemned anyone  who did not wash  their hands  before eating.     So,  Jesus condemned the Pharisees  in Matthew 15:7-9,

You hypocrites,  rightly did Isaiah  prophesy  of you:

“This people honors Me  with their lips,
But their heart  is far away  from Me.
But  in vain  do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines  the precepts  of men.”

Since they were worshiping God  “in vain”,  they were stubbornly headed  for hell.     Everyone  was so accustomed  to this man-made rule  about washed hands  that Jesus  had to explain  the evil  in it.     He said in Matthew 15:11,

It is not  what enters  into the mouth  that defiles  the man,  but what proceeds out  of the mouththis defiles the man.

The puzzled disciples  needed a clearer explanation,  so Jesus says  in Matthew 15:17-20,

Do you not understand  that everything  that goes  into the mouth passes  into the stomach,  and is eliminated?     But  the things  that proceed out  of the mouth  come from the heart,  and those defile  the man.     For out of the heart  come evil thoughts,  murders,  adulteries,  fornications,  thefts,  false witness,  slanders.     These are the things  which defile the man;  but  to eat  with unwashed hands  does not defile  the man.

Are we willing  to accept  Jesus’ loving warning?     Every false teaching  and evidence  of wrongful hatred  needs  to be washed out  of our hearts.     We need  to humbly  let Jesus  wash away  these sins  and lead us  in God’s truths  through faith  and trust  in His word.

Loving God’s wisdom  and salvation,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Cleanse  our hearts,  Lord,  for Your ways  are right.”

Love,
Margaret
