The Lord  Is the Sustainer  of My Soul

Just where  do we go  for strength  to face the day  —  the coming days  and years?     Do we look  to all sorts  of self-help books?     Do we think  staying physically fit  is the answer  to all  of life’s problems?     Do we depend  on various meditation techniques  from eastern religions?     Some depend  on friends  or their savings accounts.

King David never depended  on his own physical strength,  military prowess,  or riches.     During his life,  he was  in dangers  of every imaginable sort.     There was  no end  to his troubles.     Through it all,  he had one continuing admission  that he expressed  in Psalm 54:4,

Behold,  God is my helper;
The Lord  is the sustainer  of my soul.

David didn’t keep the knowledge  of his strength  and success  a secret.     He confessed it  to the whole world.     Even his worst enemies knew  from where  he drew  his strength  —  and that’s why some hated him.     David confessed  in Psalm 55:22  and invites us  to get strength  from there,

Cast  your burden  upon the LORD  and He will sustain you;
He will never allow  the righteous  to be shaken.

We need  to realize  that God’s word  always calls  all believers  “the righteous”.     All those  who believe  in the LORD  as our Creator  and Redeemer  in Christ Jesus  will be sustained  through their challenges.     David was so confident  in the LORD’s love  that he sang  in Psalm 3:5,

I lay down  and slept;
I awoke,  for the LORD  sustains me.

Yes,  at that time that Psalm  was written,  David  was fleeing  for his very life  —  his son,  Absalom,  was hot  on his trail  to kill him  and take over the throne.   ( 2 Samuel 15 )     Even in the face  of death,  David trusted the LORD  to sustain him.     When God wants us  to live,  we will live.

Trusting God,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You for being  “the sustainer  of my soul”.”

Love,
Margaret
