God Is Not a Man

God  Is Not  a Man

To believe  —  and yet not believe  —  puts a person  in a tough bind,  especially when sinful man  is urged on  by his own  sinful desires  in this life.     That’s how it was  for King Balak,  king of Moab.     He fully realized  that the LORD God Almighty  had delivered the Israelites  from slavery  in Egypt  and was blessing them.     But,  King Balak wanted the LORD God Almighty  to put a curse  on the Israelites,  and stop blessing them  so he would be able  to defeat Israel  and drive them away  from his territory.

King Balak asked the prophet Balaam  to pray  to the LORD  with his request.     Balaam had King Balak set up seven altars and sacrifice a bull and ram  on each.     Then the prophet prayed.     This procedure took place twice  as God refused  to honor King Balak’s desires,  instead blessing Israel each time.     King Balak found this terribly frustrating.

After the second  time sacrifices  were made,  and Israel was blessed,  the prophet Balaam plainly said  in Numbers 23:19,

God  is not a man,  that He should lie,
Nor a son  of man,  that He should repent;
Has He said,  and will He not  do it?
Or has He spoken,  and will He not make it good?

God refused  to turn His promises  to Israel  into lies.     He would not  change His mind,  because God can be trusted  to keep  His promises.     People renege  on their promises  all the time  without an honest care.      But,  God has the power  to make  His promises sure  —  because  “God is not a man”  —  nor has He ever been  “a son  of man”.

The bottom line is  that God has promised  to forgive  all the sins  of everyone  who turns  to Jesus  in faith.     That repeated promise  will never  be changed.     We can trust  in the power  of Jesus’ forgiveness  to make us holy  and pure  in God’s eyes,  so that we may have eternal life.

Believing our LORD,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for your faithful promises.”

Love,
Margaret
