The Lord Was Adding to Their Number
Quite often Christians feel like their attempts to witness to others about Christ are dismal failures. There are many pastors who feel unsuccessful in their tiny congregations. Christians are not to be discouraged by their smallness. As we read through God’s word, God is always working with very small things.
Israel is a small nation — but through Israel, God brought us the Savior, and His word has spread throughout the world. God’s work through small Israel has grown large. Jesus taught in Luke 13:18-19,
What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.
God spreads His word through His people, and we are not to worry about how He is working. We only need to remain faithful to the truths of our Lord and Savior, and He will take care of the rest. That truth is expressed in Isaiah 55:11,
So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;
It will not return to Me empty,
Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
God sends out His word through us and He accomplishes what He desires with it. God makes it succeed — not people. We are simply the means God uses to accomplish His work. After Christ’s resurrection, as the disciples preached, Acts 2:47 tells us,
The Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
All our witnessing is “the Lord” at work in us and in those we witness to. We are not to look for greatness — just for a faithful, loving service to our Creator Redeemer. Let us not complain about how the Lord works. He knows what He is doing, so we humbly say, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for planting Your word in us.”
Love,
Margaret
