Return  to Your Rest,  O My Soul

We can be  at rest,  and then suddenly  our whole world seems  to be falling apart.     Some sort  of trouble  has struck.     We are immediately  calling  on God  to save us.     What takes place  might be similar  to Psalm 116:4-9,

Then I called  upon the name  of the LORD;
“O LORD,  I beseech You,  save my life!”
Gracious is the LORD,  and righteous;
Yes,  our God  is compassionate.
The LORD  preserves the simple;
I was brought low,  and He saved me.
Return  to your rest,  O my soul,
For the LORD  has dealt bountifully  with you.
For You  have rescued  my soul  from death,
My eyes  from tears,
My feet  from stumbling.
I shall walk  before the LORD
In the land  of the living.

Whatever  the situation,  our God rescues us  time and again  because  “our God  is compassionate”.      We can be quite  “simple”  and naive  in the things we do  —  and our foolishness  can cause  big time problems  —  but when we trust  in the LORD,  we recognize that  “He saved me”.

In the sheer relief  of being saved,  we can say,  Return  to your rest,  O my soul,  for the LORD  has dealt bountifully  with you”.     Our Lord’s  gracious rescue  saves us  from all sorts  of grief  and further sin  —  “For You  have rescued  my soul  from death,  my eyes  from tears,  my feet  from stumbling.”

God’s actions  save us  from eternal “death”  in hell.     He keeps us  from getting  into deeper troubles  and sins.     Our own will power  cannot keep us  out of trouble  the way God can.     When we trust  in the LORD,  we can confidently say,  “I shall walk  before the LORD  in the land  of the living.”

Confident  in God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for letting us rest  in Your faithful love.”

Love,
Margaret
