If Anyone  Suffers  As a Christian

There are times  when we are made  to suffer  simply because  we are Christian.     It’s nothing new.     The Christians  in the early church  were thrown  into prison,  fed  to the lions,  beheaded,  killed  with the sword,  and tortured  in various ways.

Today  in America,  we face mockings,  slander,  loss of job,  lower grades  in higher education,  and rejection  by peers.     But,  in other parts  of the world,  Christians  are still being imprisoned,  tortured,  and murdered.     The apostle Peter  did not want us  to be surprised  by this sort  of hatred.     It’s a hatred  motivated only  by an intense hatred  for God.     So,  we are only  the “middleman”,  who happens  to be handy  for an easy attack.

It does not matter  that our lives  have reflected  lovingkindness,  gentleness,  goodness,  high moral standards  and high ethical standards.

Peter tells us  in 1 Peter 4:14-16,

If you are reviled  for the name  of Christ,  you are blessed,  because the Spirit  of glory  and of God  rests  upon you.

By no means  let any  of you suffer  as a murderer,  or thief,  or evildoer,  or a troublesome meddler;  but if anyone suffers  as a Christian,  let him  not feel ashamed,  but  in that name  let him glorify God.

If the world  can see  that we are true children  of God,  we don’t have anything  to be ashamed of.     Rather,  we have great reason  to glorify God,  because  His grace  and mercy  are evident  in our lives.     It means  we are living  as children  of the King  should live.

It is very obvious  to everyone  that we have not been weak  or suckered  into the dregs  of sin  —  like the rest  of the world.     The fact  that we have been freed  from the stronghold  of sin shows.     That is a blessing  we need  to hold onto  and praise God for.

Since Judgment Day  is coming  with absolute certainty,  we need  to entrust  our souls  to our Lord  and Savior,  so that He will strengthen us  to endure  whatever kinds  of trials  are allowed  to come our way.     As we endure  we will have  the blessing  of God abiding  in us  and the promise  of eternal life.     What more could we ask.

As we lean  on our Lord  to sustain us  from day-to-day,  we gratefully say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  You suffered  and died  in innocence  to pay  for all our sins.     As unbelievers  revile us,  let us live  in a way  that glorifies You.”

Love,
Margaret
