Open  My Eyes,  That I  May Behold

Considering the number  of false teachings  that claim  to be Christian,  we all need  to pray along  with the psalmist  in Psalm 119:17-18,

Deal bountifully  with Your servant,
That  I may live  and keep  Your word.

Open my eyes,  that I may behold
Wonderful things  from Your law.

It is only  as we diligently  study God’s word  and look  to our LORD  for His gracious help  that we will be able  to see  the “wonderful things”  He sets before us  in His word.     Those many  “wonderful things”  include love,  holiness,  righteousness,  eternal salvation  through faith  in Christ Jesus alone,  and the surety that  there is only one  LORD and God  over all.

To be able to see  the unfolding  of God’s plan  of salvation  throughout the Old Testament  —  and the detailed fulfillment  of our free salvation  in Jesus  —  is a most “wonderful” thing.     No other so-called god,  that people look to,  has done anything near  to what the LORD  has done.     History bears out  the truthfulness  and trustworthiness  of all  of God’s word.

We all  need God  to  “deal bountifully”  with us  as we study His word  —  come to a true faith  that will enable us  to  “live”  eternally  —  and be strengthened  to “keep”  His  “word”.     All the false teachings  that are floating around  rob people  of a true faith  in Jesus alone.

False teachings lead people  to dwell on  and fantasize  over verses taken out of context  —  to misinterpret figurative,  symbolic verses  —  to depend  on their own efforts  for salvation  —  and to make up teachings,  rules,  regulations,  and rituals that are not biblical.     None of these things  can compare  to the “wonderful things”  God’s word  actually sets before us.

It is vital  to pray,  Open my eyes,  that I may behold  wonderful things  from Your law.”     God’s  “law”  refers  to all  of His word  —  all  of His ways.

With open eyes,   we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You have done  all things  for us  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
