Because  of the Word

Jesus spoke  to His disciples  and taught them God’s  “word”.     Jesus also speaks  to us today  through the inspired “word” of God  —  the Bible.     As we read  God’s “word”  and it convicts  our hearts  of our sins  and forgiveness through Christ Jesus,  we grow  in the true faith,  and become fruitful  in our lives.

That does not mean  we become a smashing success,  rich,  and powerful.     Rather,  Galatians 5:22-23  says,

But the fruit  of the Spirit  is love,  joy,  peace,  patience,  kindness,  goodness,  faithfulness,  gentleness,  self-control…

In other words,  God leads us  to live  God-pleasing lives  serving those  around us.     We cannot lead God-pleasing lives  through our own efforts  of self-righteousness.     Our righteousness  and holiness  are gifts  from God  through faith  in Jesus.     Jesus says  in John 15:1-4,

I am the true vine,  and My Father  is the vinedresser.     Every branch  in Me  that does not bear fruit,  He takes away;  and every branch  that bears fruit,  He prunes it  so that  it may bear more fruit.     You are already clean  because  of the word  which I have spoken  to you.     Abide  in Me,  and I in you.

When we read  God’s word  and come  to faith,  Jesus makes us “clean”  “because  of the word”  we believe.     We aren’t believing  just anyone’s word  —  we are believing  God’s eternal  “word”.     Believing God  changes our lives.     We no longer desire  the things  of this sinful world.     Much rather,  we long  for all the wondrous beauty  of God’s truths  that are good,  loving,  righteous,  and eternally true.

We will be  “pruned”  —  tested  —  so that our faith will grow  and our lives bear  the kind  of “fruit”  that God likes.     These are all gifts  of God’s love  and grace  as He keeps us  “clean  because  of the word”  that we love  to  “abide in”.

“Because  of the word”  we rejoice,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Thank You  for abiding  in us,  that we may abide  in You.”

Love,
Margaret
