Test My Mind  and My Heart

We think  we know what we like  —  what we want  —  and what we imagine  is in our best interest.     Along with our own personal desires,  we have a desire  to spend eternity  in heaven.     But,  in the meantime,  our earthly desires  seem more important.     We actually have  more desire  to please ourselves  instead  of God.

We don’t want  to think about  how our desires  might not be good  for us.     That doesn’t feel good  as feelings of guilt creep in.     Nevertheless,  our sinful natures are always trying  to justify  our desires.     As much as King David  loved the LORD  and God’s ways,  he also had  a sinful nature  that needed  to be kept in check.     So,  David prayed  in Psalm 26:2,

Examine me,  O LORD,  and try me;
Test my mind  and my heart.

It is so important  to pay attention  to God’s leading,  guiding,  righteousness,  and love.     Because God has proven  His love  and righteousness  in Christ Jesus,  we should be assured  that His ways are always  in our very best interest.     In other words,  we need to humbly  and willingly accept  God’s discipline  and guidance.

When David asks God  to  “test my mind  and my heart”,  he was wanting God  to mold his heart  and mind  to make him  true  and righteous.     The Hebrew word  for “test”  includes the ideas of smelting,  refining,  testing,  and proving true.     David wanted God  to get rid  of all  of his sinful tendencies,  so that he would have a heart  and mind  that were pure  —  like refined gold.

Our hearts  and our minds  need  to be molded,  tested  and guided  by the LORD.     Then,  we will say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  to You alone  belongs all the glory  for our salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
