The Demons Also Believe and Shudder
Many people call themselves Christian because they know about Jesus and that Jesus suffered and died on the cross so that we could have salvation. They feel that their knowledge about Jesus is all that is necessary for their personal salvation. But, James 2:19 shows us a very serious truth.
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
That’s something to think about. We know “the demons” are definitely not headed for eternal life. They surely know that God exists — that Jesus suffered, died, and rose again. They “believe” because they saw what took place. So, they actually know that Jesus is victorious at the right hand of the Father.
But, they do not have the moral conviction to actually want to rely on Christ for their salvation. They don’t want to worship Jesus. In their arrogant pride, they want to have things their way. They don’t like thinking about Ephesians 2:8,
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
In their way of thinking, it is too humbling and demeaning to have to totally lean on God’s grace, and accept salvation as a gift. Their way includes their desire to be hateful, spiteful, and self-centered. The belief of the demons does not include trust and cleaving to Christ as our Savior in love. That is why they “shudder” when they think about Jesus.
James wants all people to think about that fact as they consider how and what they believe and trust in. And 1 Corinthians 1:21 explains,
Since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
To “believe” in the right way is to have an absolute personal love and reliance on all that Jesus has done for us. Like little children, we joyfully trust in the love and salvation of Christ our Savior. Ever glad, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, it is so good to live in Your care.”

Margaret
